New Comet Lulin May Be Seen in Night Skies in February

It’s not all that often you get to see a comet in the sky is it? No idea really. I just can’t remember ever seeing one, or hearing about seeing one other than Haley’s Comet which is observable every 78 years. Slim chance you would ever see that one twice eh? Better chance to find weight loss supplements that actually work.

Comet Lulin is actually a new comet. Discovered just last year at Lulin Observatory at Nantou, Taiwan on July 11, 2007. But it was a 19-year old student, Quanzhi Ye at Sun Yat-sen University in Mainland China who first recognized the new object on three images that were taken by Lin.

The comet will be closest to Earth on February 24th (day before my B-day. I want money. Thanks), and should appear as a dim fuzzy star. Here is a primitive drawing of where it would be in the sky. Take a look here for information on viewing Comet Lulin, as well as a bit more about its history and discovery.

I was able to see Haley’s comet a while ago and I was fairly young, around the age of 10 so I might be able to see it again in my life, that is to say if I can make it that long.
