Using the Sun to Cool and Produce Refrigeration

Promethan Power Systems is working on a way to use solar panels to create refrigeration with out a generator. It plans to show off a prototype unit, designed specifically for rural areas in India, at the Emerging Technologies conference at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology next month.

If successful, the company’s end product will be a small building to store milk, medicines, or other perishable goods in India and other places that don’t have reliable electricity. This would be an amazing technology that would essentially help keep food and medicines fresh for much longer periods for these rural areas that are short on power supplies.

Heck this may even be a best buy for use here if it is readily available.

If you want to read more in depth about this CNet has a well written article on the subject as well as an artist’s rendition of what these coolers may look like here.
