Black Holes, LIGO, RHIC, and Oblivion
After watching the Universe this week I got pretty interested in Black Holes. Particularly the LIGO Machine that was featured in the episode in which it was said they may be able to at some point create microscopic black holes themselves. Funny thing was the first though that came to mind was that we could create these black holes to suck ourselves into oblivion, but they quickly put a stop to my fears.
I just searched for black holes and the first thing I saw was an old article about this exact fear on MSNBC.com Good News! Black Holes Won’t Destroy Earth! That is good news. I guess I don’t have to worry about my recent real estate purchases being sucked into oblivion.
Anyways, what I really wanted to link to was the LIGO Project, or The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory, and the other project they mentioned known as a Realistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) were both very interesting to read about after the show. If you are into this space stuff at all I would take a look at both those sites just to see the crazy projects scientists are working on in regards to particle collision, and trying to figure out how the universe looked moments after it was formed.
