John McCain’s MySpace Page Prank

At first when I saw this story on TechCrunch under John McCains’s MySpace Page “Enhanced” I didn’t think anything of it, but it seems to have gotten the attention of more than a few news outlets. I actually saw them refer to this prank on the Daily Show yesterday which took me by surprise when watching the show. Of course this is a potential presidential candidate so I guess the coverage is expected.

I was enjoying the little internet drama on TechCrunch yesterday when they person who pulled off the prank showed up to defend himself against a couple of outspoken readers there. Mike Davidson was the man behind the prank and he has the Daily Show Video up on his site right now as well.

There were a few the last couple of days claiming that Mike was irresponsible, but there is something to point out here. McCain’s camp was stealing his bandwidth. Sure he took an opportunity to get some extra press, but this is actually a great lesson to those people who like to hot link pictures that are hosted by someone else. At any time they can change that image and make you look like a fool, and should. It isn’t difficult to just upload an image to Photobucket or Imageshack if you are too cheap to host it on your own server. Mike Davidson did the right thing in my opinion and I also thought it was pretty damned funny.

Well done Mike!
