Apple, Cisco settle iPhone trademark lawsuit

Gotta love the persistence to get the name and Cisco for taking it to Apple on this issue. Also have to love the future thinking Infogear company that trademarked the name back in 1996. Of course I assume that this is more of a luck thing than someone actually saying that they could probably make something out of the iPhone name from Apple back then. Not necessarily intentional, but it may have been a plan. I used to work for an advertising agency that would assign projects during dead times to trademark words and phrases.

At the time, they trademarked things like pop culture terms. Sort of like reserving dot com names for everything under the sun.

PS-McDonald’s was one our clients, so we trademarked Mc” everything.

Another point is, trademarks are kind of useless unless you are one of the big boys. You probably will not remember this, but as an example, “Apple” was highly contested by the Beatles for decades, and recently settled with Apple Computer.
